A few brief notes from the last few days:
2002 Pinot Noir, Silver Thread, Finger Lakes (NY):
This is at a very enjoyable place right now. Mid-red with just a hint of orange/brown, some sediment. Initially closed, but becomes very aromatic after an hour or so. Cherry, light barnyard, dare I say somewhat Burgundian nose? On the palate there is more cherry with strawberry, lightly nutty earth, nice light but ripe structure. Incense and rose on hints pop up in the finish. Not at all like west coast pinot. Maybe lacks a bit of weight, but good in the lighter style. BTW, made from essentially organic grapes, although not certified. The composite cork makes me frown, but no problem (this time). Gives one hope for PN in the FInger Lakes; about $20.
2005 Markus Fries Bernkastler Schlossberg Riesling Kabinett Feinherb:
A follow-up to a TN I posted here over a year ago. Looking a bit more golden than I would expect (well stored bottle). Comes off as mature, but not damaged. Extremely long and well balanced, this is firing on all cylinders. Fantastic wine from a small (ca. 4 ha) producer with lots of old vines. First had this by the glass at Gotham Bar & Grill in NYC and was pleased to find a few bottles (at $15) at Astor Wines. Just off-dry, a very appealing style. Does anyone else have experience with other wines from this producer?
