WTN: 2 good rather than great wines

by Dale Williams » Mon Apr 27, 2009 3:26 pm

Before I went to my local group Friday, I grilled some franks in time to have dinner with Betsy. Opened the 2007 Hoffmann-Simon Piesporter Goldtropfchen Kabinett. Lush peach fruit with orange marmalade, on sweet side for Kabinett, but with some tense acidity. Revisited a couple days later holding up well. Not the stunner the Haart PG Kab is, but about half the price. B

Sunday (92°F in April) we went to visit an employee in the hospital, stopped by Fairway on way home and got a whole red snapper. Stuffed it with herbs and lemon, grilled alongside some potatoes and fava beans. Wine was the 2007 Boudin Chablis. Rather steely, citrus and apple fruit, nice mineral notes on a finish that's rather long for Chablis AC. Besides, who wouldn't like a wine named for sausage? B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

That's about what I would expect from Hoffmann-Simon. I think the son (who is now running the estate) has his eyes on even better things, but Papa is still around & calling some of the shots to do it the way it was always done.

Still, I like the wines, and I consider them good value.

Kind of sums it up. Not something to go looking for, but to buy to go over an order minimum or fill out a mixed case for a discount.
