Nice casual dinner with a couple of good friends to enjoy an early start to the weekend for all of us and some long-awaited spring weather.
2001 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
The cork had me worried for a bit here - came out in one piece after a long struggle, but showed a significant amount of mold in the middle. The wine was slightly musty at first, but then that cleared with some time in a decanter to reveal beautiful, gentle aromas of apple, strawberries, lemon blossom and minerals. Incredibly light and delicate - almost weightless on the palate with clear, precise fruit and mineral flavours and a long finish with barely any sense of sweetness.
2007 Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett
This shows lovely floral, slatey and white fruited aromas with bright orange, apple and nectarine flavours following on the palate over a little spritz. This doesn't have the acidity, lift or precision of the '01 though and suffers a little in contrast.
2006 Carl von Schubert Maximin Grunhaus Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese (AP #014-13)
Delicious, bright fruit flavours with waves of green and red apples, citrus fruits and peaches layered over pine cones and minerals. Lots of acidity and tremendous clarity and precision with a very long finish. Brilliant wine! (Damnit - why did I not buy more of this when Crush had it on sale?)
