My first hit-out with this particular label and compared to this maker's disappointing overtly oaky and under-fruited Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "La Garenne" from 2004 (80 points) reviewed recently, this Chassagne tells a somewhat different story.
Holds an attractive light lemon gold hue with an impressive gleam and like the Garenne delivers a seductive nose redolent with first-class oak usage - oatmeal, grilled nuts and wood spice but with some subtle melon and apply fruit lurking underneath. In the mouth the wine holds a wonderful line with similarly-etched fruit and oak singing in harmony, good acidity, a somewhat mellow, creamy texture mid-palate and a persistent, quite grippy finish. No world-beater but certainly a very good effort and should last for 3-5 years, possibly longer. 87 points.
