WTN: 2001 Darnaud Crozes-Hermitage

I'm not sure of the production on this wine, but it probably is not coming to your supermarket shelf anytime soon. Also, if you like your wine sleek and modern I'd suggest you give this one a wide berth.
Purple, almost black in the stem. Dark black fruit is joined by smoky bacon (Hey, is this Cote-Rotie?) , sweaty saddle leather, black olives and just a touch of horse heiney on the nose. Complex and never boring. I drink new world Syrah from time to time and some of it is very good, but I still marvel at what a competent winemaker can produce from Syrah grown on the No. Rhone. IIIRC, this was priced in the ~$25 range and worth every cent.
