Advice on German wines

by JC (NC) » Thu Apr 02, 2009 11:03 am

A Raleigh wine shop has some 2006 and 2007 German wines available. I am considering some from Molitor and Studert-Prum. Also Scharzhofhofberger from Vereinigte Hospitien. Any thoughts on these producers? (I have enjoyed some from Studert-Prum in the past.)

I've found Molitor's wines to be quite inconsistent - a couple have been nice (and his 05 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Goldkapsel Auslese** was breathtaking), but I've had a handful that felt quite awkward and unbalanced, at times overly sweet and sugary.

Studert-Prum - don't have much experience with them, but from what I've heard the wines are generally decent - solid, drinkable but not particularly memorable. Not familiar with the third producer.

You might also note the prices? Are these being offered at purportedly great deals?

I'm not sure how the prices compare. They seem reasonable. Examples:

Molitor Riesling Kabinett Hattenheimer 2006 $15.99
Molitor Riesling Spatlese Hattenheimer 2007 $17.99
Studert-Prum Riesling Kabinett Wehlener Sonnenuhr 2007 $20.99
'" " " Spatlese Graacher Himmelreich 2006 $23.99
The Scharzhofberger is a little more expensive.
