WTN: Cathedral Cellar Sauvignon Blanc 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Apr 01, 2009 3:04 pm

WO Western Cape

Light yellow in the glass.

Goosebery, dry and peppery on the nose.

Medium weight, lemon, lime, gooseberry, green apple, good acidity, lightly prickly on the tongue, lively and refreshing, peppery, with a hint of sweet citrus fruit.

A mouthwatering finish.

Not the greatest SB I have ever had, but quite good, especially at the price.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian) and great value, IMHO.

Bruce,

Thanks as always for your most pertinent notes. Whatever you write about, I can nearly always track down and try as well.

Cathedral Cellar continues the fine tradition of the KWV line (no longer so-labelled or available anymore at the LCBO) of inexpensive, but very well made everyday wines. I particularly like their Cab Sauv and think that for $16.95 it is a very good bargain.

I do wish that Vintages would bring in the Cathedral Cellar Pinotage; that one has not been seen yet. The Cab, Merlot and Shiraz have all been variously featured, but so far no Pinotage. I have fond memories of the old KWV Pinotage, which was also a really great steal and a perfect stylistic marriage between warm-climate fruit and old-style tannic structure.
