Believe it or not, this was my first Groffier. This was VERY strong for the vintage and level. Very characteristic village Gevrey, with black & red cherry, dark-floral notes (like candied violets), lambs-blood gaminess, and a taste of iron underneath. This was very open and loaded with fruit- not a lot of secondary color or aromas (maybe a hint of hoisin? certainly, no forest-floor here). There was a background coffee note that probably would have been intrusive in this wine's youth, but was now pretty much integrated and complimenting the fruit.
I was shocked by the intensity--this wasn't sappy but it was "sturdy". I haven't seen that in the other couple of 2000's I've opened in the past several months.
Very good. I look forward to trying some of his 1ers in the future. Does anyone know where this comes from in Gevrey? I can't imagine it comes from way down in the valley....
