WTN: Gunderloch Jean Baptiste Riesling Kabinett 2004

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:40 am

Rheinhessen

Medium dark gold in the glass.

Lots of petrol and honey on the nose.

Good acidity, medium weight, tangy green apple, lemon, honeyed, spicy, refreshing, a light dirty streak.

A long, mouthwatering, spicy finish, with a dirty-rough streak.

Enjoyable but rather simple and I didn't care for that dirty streak.

A dirty/rough streak sounds odd. The Jean Baptiste is normally whistle clean & precise. The honey note does not ring true either. Perhaps heat damage?

Hi Bruce,

I would have to agree with David. The dirty streak is an anomaly. Jean Baptiste is often my house white wine because of its affordability and consistent quality. I built up a vertical of it and we tasted 5 years 2000-2005 (every vintage except 2004 that I never saw offered at LCBO) and they were all good to very good wines. Maybe an off bottle? Or maybe something in the 2004 vintage?

That's not a 2004 vintage characteristic. Maybe 2000 or 2006, but not whistle clean, minerally, acidic 2004.
