WTN: Gneiss wine with sushi

by David M. Bueker » Sat Mar 21, 2009 7:00 pm

Grabbed some sushi at a local BYO & opened a Muscadet.

2005 Bossard Domain l'Ecu Expression de Gneiss
Almost fruity, though it is ultimately dragged down into rocky, primordial depths that show a little lemon tinge over crushed rock. It works very well with the fish.

David, you should have called the tread: Musci with sushi. Regardless there is hardly a better wine with seafood, particularly the kind with fins.

Unfortunately, it looks as if this may be the last 'successful' vintage for Bossard. I guess nothing stays the same..

Well the 2006 is pretty good too I and assume he made the 2007 but the 2005, particularly the Granite although they were all good, was pretty special Muscadet.

I assume you are referring to his reported desire 'to go fishing rather than continuing toiling in the vineyards' but I suppose he still has to find a buyer to pay a fair price in these difficult times. Perhaps he has and I have just missed it.

You are right though about nothing remains the same, particularly the good things although we can hope for a worthy successor. :(

I had the 2006 Gneiss last week and was not a big fan. Too round and brown for my tastes. Sure it was only one bottle, but I have heard from a few other people (obviously not you) that they didn't like his 2006s either. In part because of the 2006 vintage conditions, but then apparently 2007 was also problematic for Bossard and it may indeed be the financial woes.

That said, I have not tasted any of the 2007s myself and am only reporting others' words, for what that is worth.
