WTN: '06 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese

by Salil » Fri Mar 20, 2009 12:08 am

Wanted something good to drink to celebrate finally being done writing a nice long painful economics research paper. Couldn't have asked for anything better than Selbach.

This is a fabulous wine. Absolutely gorgeous aromas and flavours in the mouth with a ton of apple, lime and pineapple fruit, some hints of honey and spice suggesting botrytis and gentler mint, slate and vanilla flavours underneath. Rich with a creamy, smooth texture, yet incredibly light with good acidity and a long finish that's like mineral-infused honey. Selbach hits it out of the park again. :D

I have always admired the consistency of Selbach-Oster. The good thing is that now the consistency is at a very high (nearly the highest) level.

And best of all, they're consistently producing wines at the top quality that are still really affordable. Both this and the 06 Zeltinger Schlossberg were just around/over the $20 mark, and the 07 Schmitt was just over $30 at Table & Vine. All the more reason to buy them and love em.

And the '05 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spatlese was (maybe still is - don't know if any is left) on sale at T&V for 20% off.

Still is.

I may have picked up more... except that they had 07 Rotlay on the shelves at long last.

Even the wines made from purchased grapes can be very good at times. I bumped into Johannes Selbach at the local wine shop a week ago Friday (my stopping-in was quite serendipitous!). Johannes wasn't pouring the Selbach-Oster single vineyard wines, but he did have the '07 Selbach-Oster Estate Spatlese and the '07 Selbach-labeled wines made from purchased grapes -- Bernkasteler Karfurstlay Kabinett and Auslese. All the wines were enjoyable, and the Auslese is a steal for the price (I believe around $15-ish here in my area).

Johannes was a great host as well... friendly and easy to talk to.

Selbach is pretty much the only "negotiant" I would ever consider buying those grosslage wines from. They are at least drinkable, which is a lot more than can be said for 99% of the other versions.
