A Spanish bargain - Bodegas Ateca

by Matt Richman » Tue Mar 17, 2009 10:20 pm

2007 Bodegas Ateca - Atteca Old Vines, Calatayud
Deep, round, dark fruit. Notes of coffee, smoke, chocolate, and some flowers. Has a bit of sweetness, but the overall profile is dark and heavy. Manages to be pretty despite this. Long finish with some noticeable oak. Good balance, smooth, and suave. A steal for the price.

How much did you pay? The 2006 is on offer here in Ontario for $22.95, which doesn't qualify as a bargain in my book.

I think the names of the wines these guys put out are a little confusing, there are several with very similar names. Plus this wine has both "Ateca" and "Atteca" in it's name. In other words, you might be looking at a different bottling.

This bottle cost me $12.
