WTN: 2006 Bachelet Cotes de Nuits Villages

by David M. Bueker » Sun Mar 15, 2009 7:05 pm

With the scary rise in prices for basic Bourgogne wines (e.g. Lafarge is now $30, Chevillon $28), I was very happy to find this on sale at Zachy's for $30. After tasting it I am even happier. Fruity, earthy, dense and balanced, this is a wine made to please now and to cellar well for some time. I would prefer to give it 2 or 3 years for some of the tannin to soften just a bit, but it sure does bring a lot of pleasure right this very instant.

Thanks for the note, this sound very nice, is it Denis or Bernard Bachelet?

Do you know if this comes from 1 or 2 limited vineyards? Or is a mixture of fruit from all over.

Rahsaan, Burghound says "from 4 different parcels in Brochon."

After tasting it at an in-store tasting a few months ago, I picked up a bottle of 06 Denis Bachelet Bourgogne from Chambers that BH says drink 2010+. For the CdNV BH says drink 2011+ (as you suggest, Robert).

Oswaldo beat me to it, though I don't have Burghound to reference, just a lot of e-mails with Maureen.

Drinking a bottle of this tonight and it does provide a lot of pleasure but I'm not sure how 'dense' it is.

Seems to be more about the aromas and flavors right now.

For a CdN Villages? Everything is relative.

Yes, that is true. And was quite 'dark'.

I guess I had read so much hyperbole on the internet about it punching above its class. Which it did to a certain extent, but to my label-bewitched palate the CdNV level was still evident.

Regardless, it was delicious and something I would not hesitate to purchase again.

I guess that was me (see below, from about a month ago). :)
I'd stand beside the punching above its weight line. I can't think of another CdNV that I've ever had that had this (yes) density, other than maybe the '99 of the same. What producers have you had that were comparable to this? Most CdNV are quite thin and forgettable. For me, I think this could fit in a blind lineup of village Gevreys or MSDs without standing out as a fraud. Not as good as Bachelet's Gevrey, but it's half the price.

"a lovely wine even if I was fighting beginning of a cold. Definitely punching above it's class, black and red cherry fruit with layers of earth, coffee/mocha, and spices. Really solid fruit, light and ripe but clear tannins, good acidity. Very good length. I'll buy more of this. A-/B+"

Dale, Jean Marc Millot makes a very good CdNV for under $30 that is pretty serious for the appellation. Scott Paul wines in Oregon is the importer.
I haven't tried the '06, but the 2005 was delicious.

There was a good bit of hype about this wine over on eBob that made Dale's comments look tame.

I had the 06 with Scott and it was very good. I have a bottle on deck to taste at home which will be the true test.

I'll keep an eye open for the Millot (I think I've heard good things before about the producer), but it seems to only be in NW.
Funnily, in a broader search for Millot, there's a wine listed on Winesearcher as JM Billot Clos Vougeot, Willamette Valley. :)
