2007 Strub Riesling Niersteiner Bruekchen Kabinett (Rheinhessen):

An impulse buy while wine shopping today. Strub usually represents good value, so I grabbed a bottle hoping to get a feel for the '07 Germans. Fairly exotic fruits on the nose and palate: maybe guava and dried apricot, set against a creamy, dusty background. Quite sweet for a kab, but still pretty light on its feet. Nothing very complex going on, and could use a bit more acidity to balance the sweetness. Decent, not outstanding. 10% abv $16

And you got a feel for '07 with that one. It's quite representative. The '07s have a lot of baby fat that covers up their acidity. The sweetness will be needed for aging (to avoid the wines tasting shrill after several years in bottle).

Are you sure the acidity is there under that sweetness? This one did seem a little soft. I was holding off on going heavily into '07 Germans due to having a decent number of earlier vintages. Will certainly pick up a few others though.

The acidity is indeed there. I'm not much into the analyticals, but I know for this one that there is ample acid.

Slight digression, but are either of you familiar with Strub's 98s? Just saw his Paterberg Spatlese*** at a pretty decent price and am thinking of biting.

Don't bother. I own some. Let me know when you want to drink it.
