WTN: Gruaud Larose 2003

by Jay Labrador » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:48 pm

A friend needed some help polishing off a double magnum of Gruaud Larose 2003 and a group of us winos were happy to oblige.

Gruaud Larose 2003 - No decanting, poured straight from the bottle. Very dark. On the nose, mint and leather. Surprisingly approachable. The tannins are just right at this point. Earth and tobacco showing prominently on the palate. There's good fruit in this as well. Well-balanced and seamless. It seems to have peaked early but should stay that way for a long time. I guess some more complexity could be coaxed from this with a few more years in the bottle but its a real good drink now.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.

Thanks for the note Jay. I have never tasted a Gruaud, but I have a 1990 model in my cellar waiting for its 20th anniversary. I hope that my bottle is as good as yours.
