WTN: Sonoma County: Soujourn and Pelegrinni

2002 Soujourn Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Mountain (Glen Ellen) Quite a bit of tannins here. Also, pretty fumey (14.5% abv) Still very primary. But...enough of the caveats, I found the fruit in this wine luscious and beautiful, with very nice anise and red currant along with the blackberry and tobacco notes. Good acidity. Probably too young, but I quite ejoyed this wine, even though it was definitely more of a"fruit bomb" than I generally prefer. The fruit was simply so delicious.

2005 Pellegrini Family "Milestone"
(Merlot-Based Bordeaux Blend). This, on the other hand, was not very enjoyable to me :( Very, very soft (especially for a 2005) and very sweet. Decanter Magazine used the term "Pepsi Cola" to describe over-oaked Barolos from a few years back and this wine very much reflects a cherry cola sweetness. I could not even finish the glass, to be honest. This family winery hits all the talking points I like-family owned, organic grapes, heritage, etc. I just don't like their wines AT ALL. Decanter also spoke about formulas and ticking all the boxes and generic wines. This expensive blend exemplifies the problem. Avoid.

I like the Sojourn wines, cabs and PN's..wasn't aware they went back to 2002..Was Eric Bradley the winemaker back then?

I think so, but not sure.

I noticed that they have now opened a new tasting room near the Sonoma Town Square. Might have to check it out.

Brian, I liked the Pellegrini Olivet Lane Pinot Noir when I tasted there in 2007. Have you tried that Pinot Noir? (I know Pinot isn't your favorite variety.) Merry Edwards and others make an Olivet Lane Pinot Noir but the grapes are grown by Pellegrini.

Will look for this, JC.

Have to admit I have not found a Pellegrini wine yet that I like. :?
