WTN: Three wines by the glass

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Feb 22, 2009 12:19 pm

Was travelling on business earlier this week, so tried a number of wines by the glass.

Arabella Shiraz 2008
Robertson
Stephen & Jamie de Wet
Dark red in the glass.
Roasted notes, spicy, red licorice on the nose.
Thick in the mouth, spicy, smoky, cranberry, red currants, brett, red licorice, charred-roasted, tangy.
Quite nice and robust.

Finca Flichamn Misterio Malbec 2007
Dark purple in the glass.
Tangy, light to medium weight, light creaminess, blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, tangy, woody-drying, a bit of a bitter bite.
A drying finish.
I was expecting something with a bit more body and heft, but I am not sure how long the bottle may have been open, so that might have had something to do with it.
Pleasant, but not memorable.

Smoking Loon Viognier 2006
California
Rich gold in the glass.
Honey and spices on the nose.
Medium weight, rich, honeyed, floral, peach, orange, citrus rind, mild citrus rind bitterness toward the end, good acdity, spicy. thick and viscous.
A very rich and showy wine.

It's been a while since I have seen anything about Smoking Loon. The aromatic & flavor profile sound lovely, though the "viscous" comment isn't ringing my chimes. I'm not sure why not, since I love the viscosity of Gewurztraminer.
