WTN: Cafe Culture Pinotage 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Feb 21, 2009 11:40 am

WO Western Cape
KWV

Dark red in the glass.

Smoke, strongly burned-charred notes and vanilla on the nose.

Jammy cherry and raspberry fruit, lots of brett, tangy, spicy, a light bitter edge, medium weight, heavily charred.

A very long smoky, charred, spicy finish.

A very unusual style, IMHO, and I can see people either loving or hating this. I found it quite rich and enjoyably different, but I can see some people being turned off by the heavy smoke and charred notes.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

No, and I was thinking just that as I was drinking the wine. I found this bottle sharper and less plush that reviews had led me to believe it would be. I bought a second bottle so will be interested to see if it is any different than the first when I ger around to opening it.

Bruce,

Many thanks for the note. I never did buy any of this when it came out; I was turned off by the modern styling and marketing in the name (something like Libertas or Lanzerac will catch my attention 9 times out of 10, by contrast). Also, isn't it like 15% alcohol or something?

I'm still teetering on whether to get this one.

It is 14 per cent alcohol Paul, which, sad to say, is quite common in wines today. I don't recall noticing the alcohol being overbearing.
