What's the best wine deal you've gotten lately?

by Jenise » Sun Feb 15, 2009 1:43 pm

I still can't top the 03 Laurel Glen for $15.90/bottle, but recession-related deals seem to be all over the place right now, and I expect some of you have hit a few jackpots. So what was in them?

The New Hampshire Liquor Store folks don't seem to know there is a recession going on. I recently (in early Feb) bought a mixed case and got no discount! That was in January I was told. This month it is only for bubbly, and sticky. In March it will only be for Chardonnay and Pinot! Give me a break!

One of the wine purveyors I frequently patronize has a year-end, invitation-only sale.....somehow, they included me. The offerings ran the price gamut but rather than looking at a case of $20 wine for $10 each, I chose to inspect the other end of the spectrum. My acquisitions included:

2000 Chapoutier "La Sizeranne" ... $40
2002 Chateau Monbousquet .... $50
2005 Chanson Chambolle-Musigny .... $40
2003 Chateau Canon-la-Gaffeliere "Comtes de Neipperg" ... $50

I also acquired 3 other $50 list wines for around $25.
Cheers!

I've got a lot of good deals recently (actually a lot after I had said I was not buying for a while!). Excluding some one-off closeouts and auction steals, some good deals on a variety of wines. Just from Grapes in White Plains (Dan Posner):

$60 '05 Rossignol-Trapet "Combottes" Gevrey-Chambertin
$15 2005 Baumard Carte d'Or
$25 '05 Baumard Paon
$25 '05 Gunderloch Nackenheim Rothenberg Auslese ***
$32 '06 JJ Prum Graacher Himmelreich Auslese

plus assorted 2004 Burg closeouts
$22 Drouhin Beaune-Greves
$60 Meo-Camuzet Chaumes Vosne
$40 G. Mugneret Chaignots NSG

Dale,

I predict you will also receive a good wine deal by the end of next week.

A local shop closing out some German wines had the 2005 Willi Haag Braunenberger Juffer Kabinett and Spaetlese rieslings for $12. The Kab is fantastic, while the Spaetlese is a bit lacking in acidity - I'll be grabbing more of the former if any is left.

How do I get invited to Dale's? His idea of a good deal and mine are in different leagues. I am not disputing that a $35 wine can't be a good deal. I just can't go there.

This seems to be happening more and more - there are so many amazing deals coming out that it's hard to not show restraint from buying.

Premier Cru had an insane offering recently - I think it included Haag GKAs in full bottles for <$40, and Schaefer Auslesen for <30/35 in fulls. And Crush now has some insane prices that I'm trying really hard to keep from biting on.

I know what you mean... I grabbed some of that Huet at Crush, as well as some Schaefer '07 QbA at what I thought were good prices.

Yes, the terms "Crush" and "good prices" don't usually go hand-in-hand, but that latest sale did change the landscape a bit in certain instances.

have to say that some of these deals sound great; but others just sound like way way overpriced stuff reduced to where they should have been. i'll bet a check of prices online would show other regular ones even lower than some of these deals. that said, here are mine:

hospice de strassbour riesling GC 2001 - $11
dr. fischer riesling classic 2006 - $6
Margaine Brut NV $26
Duval-Leron NV Brut $22.50

James, I'm just obsessive about wine. I'll (rarely) spend $100 on a bottle of wine I really want, but find $11 movie tickets too expensive. I buy my clothing at thrift shops, drive a '96 Corolla, and have a $10 haircut every 3 months. :)

I just called up what I bought from Grapes for an example. There are plenty of other wines I buy that are much cheaper- in the last few months '07 Dr L @ $7, '05 Viticcio CC @ $5, '07 Delas Esprit CdR @ $8.25.

Things of course are only a deal if you LIKE them

David, certainly there's a spread here. For one thing, some markets are more competitive, so what seems like a deal to some might not to others. All of mine seem to be lower than Winesearcher, except PC is showing the Paon for $18. But they are also showing the Carte d'Or for $25, so something weird is going on there. Great deal on the Duval-Leroy.

Dale, I am obsessive about wine too, but my wife keeps me from going over the edge. I do enjoy your posts.

Zachy's had it recently at $7. They've got it now at $9, which is still a great price given their free shipping offer.

I looked at the prices in this area and you got it for half off. A steal indeed. Dare I say , a back-up-the-truck deal?
