Valentine's Day/Anniversary dinner

VALENTINE'S DAY/ANNIVERSARY DINNER - Home (2/14/2009)

Valentine's Day is pretty special around here because it is also our anniversary. Last night Peggy and I celebrated 21 years of marriage with take out from our favorite local bistro and a couple of '88s.
With smoked salmon, arugula, fingerling potato, dill and Dijon vinaigrette:

The following paired nicely with both of our main dishes:
Pan roasted magret duck breast, sautéed parsnips, figs, Port wine sauce, and
Grilled filet mignon with cauliflower gratin and Dijon mustard sauce

  • 1988 Château Talbot - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Dark red core, lighter at rim, nice nose of cassis, cherry, earth, medium body, cherry and cassis fruit follow on palate, nice balance, medium finish, just a little complex, very nice match with both the duck and the filet. Will it develop additional complexity or will the fruit fade?

We finished with chocolate mousse, and then another glass of the Pol Roger for a nightcap. The Champagne was the clear star of the evening, wine-wise, anyway...

Pol Roger? We all hear about that `96 so good to see the `88 is spot on. Nice touch to the evening eh.

You can get all of that delivered to your house? Nice.

I guess.

What happens to the main courses while you are eating the starter? They don't suffer from sitting around already cooked?

Normally we would go out, but Peggy's been wrestling with a bulging disk, and driving/sitting were a problem, so I brought the food to her. I went to pick it up, and reheated it at home. It lost a little in the translation, but not much.

David, I hope your wife gets better. Mine has had the same problem all winter. A recent cortisone shot seems to be helping.
(Where in MD are you?)
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Ok. Given the circumstances, there is something to be said for the convenience.

James, we live in Ellicott City, work in Columbia. Where are you? Cortisone shots can really help, but they take a little while to kick in.

Rahsaan, glad you approve. :D

How wonderful of you. Great wine choices!
