WTN: Good Faury, disapointing Fevre

by Marc D » Fri Feb 13, 2009 4:36 pm

2006 Domaine Faury Syrah Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes from 2/11/09

I think this is made from vines that are a combination of being too young to go into the Cote Rotie, and some that are outside of the appellation. Classic N. Rhone profile, with the concentration and structure to age medium term. It was good last night with about an hour of air. In the nose there is pepper and a little smoked meat. The mouth is pretty tight, lots of wound up structure. Maybe a touch of vanilla, not very noticeable. A pretty good value in these days of $30+ bottles of St Joseph.

There was a big improvement overnight. The wine is more open with quite a bit more dark berry, brambly fruit, and not as much tense structure. Decant or keep in the cellar for now. A Kermit Lynch import.

2001 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Valmur from 2/12/09
I had some expectations as I have read that Fevre was improving lately, toning down the new wood. This was a letdown. There is some high quality fruit with citrus and minerals, and decent acidity but the marshmallow vanilla both in the nose and finish was a spoiler. A shame.

It was about $15 at KL's shop, so probably a bit less for Marc. I had this wine in the past 6 months and agree with Marc's assessment of it.

Actually it was closer to $20, locally.

Aha, still not bad considering the prices these days.
