WTN: 1998 Chateau St. Cosme Gigondas

I mentioned this wine briefly in Tony Fletcher's post, but thought it deserved its own note.

This is the regular bottling, not the Valbelle.

Virtually no color change apparent, and the aromatics still showed a lot of red and black fruit as well as the requisite herbs and just a hint of leather. It really seemed like a wine with much less than 10+ years on it. Initially it was a bit thin in the mid-palate, but as the bottle warmed up (a little) from cellar temp the mid-palate filled out & the finish lengthened. The aromatics also gained in strength, with more herb and especially leather and earth (clean) coming out.

This is a delicious wine to drink now, but it has the stuffing to hold a while yet in my best estimation.

I have a few '98 CNDPs that I'm still holding; I may have to open one pretty soon! Anybody else have any recent experience with the '98 vintage from the Rhone?
