2000 Groth Napa Cabernet Sauvignon

by Hoke » Wed Jan 28, 2009 7:47 pm

Had this at a lunch with friends not too long ago.

For all the flack that Napa wines get, you know, blah blah they don't age at all blah blah over the top fruit bombs blah blah blah too ripe...

well, this one was pretty damned decent and a testimony to good winemaking. Not the most spectacular vintage for Napa Cab, and still this wine showed well, with decent but not in any way over ripe fruit, no jamminess, and not overdone with vanilla syrup oak. Actually, quite lovely and balanced. Not a world shaker, no, but a nicely crafted wine from rich fruit, without going overboard. And it was holding just fine. Had I more bottles of this, I wouldn't fear to keep it for several more years.

So much for histrionics and generalizations.

In my limited experience, Groth seems to be a relatively "lean" wine for Napa.

I have been drinking though a lot of 2001 Cabs lately, and I have to confess I do like Napa Cabs with a few years on them.
