WTN: Trumpeter Malbec 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Jan 24, 2009 12:54 pm

Rutini
Mendoza

Dark red in the glass.

An initial knock out blow of sulphur on the nose. With time, that passed to reveal, well, nothing. With further time, there was some light cherry.

Light bodied, cherry cough syrup, tangy and very light on flavour at first. The wine did open up a bit with time, gaining some body, spiciness and red licorice, but it never got much above an "okay" wine.

Not much to speak of on the finish.

Have had this wine a couple of times in various vintages and while it has never been a show-stopper, I recall it was acceptable and certainly showed more fruit than this. Perhaps I had a slightly off bottle.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

I had this a couple weeks ago, probably my least favorite in a field of 6 Malbecs. Similar impressions.

I saw your note but I thought it was the 2007 you tried. Not that it made much difference, apparently.

Thanks for the heads-up. I've been exploring numerous Malbecs recently, and was ready to try this one. Maybe now I'll pass.

CHEERS !

Rutini is a good producer but Trumpeter is their entry level wine. At even the next rung up I've found them to be likeable, so don't give up on the producer based on this...

I agree with Oswaldo - do not give up on Rutini.

The entry level wines of Rutini are the San Felipe and Pequenia Vasija line of wines. Trumpeter would be their next level up, and while they are not my favorite... the Trumpeter Reserve series are a significan improvement over the regular Trumpeter line.
Alejandro Audisio - drink wines from the RIGHT side of the Andes!!!
