WTN: 2004 Odoardi Savuto

by Drew Hall » Sat Jan 24, 2009 11:48 am

A beautifully balanced and complex blend of 45% Gaglioppo, 10% Nerello Cappuccio,
10% Magliocco Canino, 10% Greco Nero, 10% Pecorino Bianco, 10% Sangiovese, and
5% Malvasia Bianca. What the heck am I drinking? Tasted at Midway, Baltimore area, yesterday after work (Friday and Saturday are tasting days) with the wine manager, and my friend, Thom.
Really nice, and very complex, red from the southern Italian region of Calabria. These Savuto grapes grow on slopes that descend from the mountains to the banks of the Savuto River. This wine was very dark purple with flavors of dark berry, dried cherry, herb, spice and leather. Medium bodied and slightly rustic, I can see pairing informally with calabrese sausage and assorted hard cheeses. Very much enjoyed this. $15.

Thanks Carl, thought I'd expand my "wine world" a little. You know I know enough to be dangerous!....to myself.

Drew--

Welcome to WLDG. Nice to have another Baltimoran on board. I just saw this wine advertized at another shop (Wine Underground, in the city between Hampden and Roland Park), and though I've heard of Odoardi, I've never seen their wines on shelves. Add one to the shopping list...
