WTN: Domaine Rimbert Le Mas Au Schiste St. Chinian

by Brian K Miller » Fri Jan 23, 2009 12:43 pm

2006 Vintage

This was not really what I "expected."

The nose is sour cherry/strawberry and white pepper. Tons of white pepper. Palate is similar, with a quite light mouth feel and a great deal of tartness. Alcohol is low.

To be honest, this is not a sip in the wine bar kind of wine-I think Beau was correct that it needed a nice hunk of salmon. Still, I do like the pepperyness-and this is utterly bone dry as well. One complaint-the finish falls off very quickly and I caught an odd off note way at the end. Not brett, but some little beastie is hanging out in their cellars. :?

84 points. Interesting more than delicious. Which is cool.

Damaged bottle? Did anyone else have more experience with the wine to know what to expect?

I have never understood the 'white pepper' descriptor for wine, but the tartness and beastiness sound like something could be wrong?

well...can't say the tartness is atypical for this "style" of wine-and I like that aspect of it- with food.

Nobody else noticed the "funk" or whatever at the end, so I may be hypersensitive. Although, I actually do tolerate obvious Brett more than most.

What it really brought to mind was a bizarre Loire Valley Gamay I had several months ago that started out with a nice bit of Gamay cherry fruit and ended with an absolute WALL of PEANUT BUTTER. Like that, on a much more restrained basis such that the wine was still very drinkable.

It was not an expensive wine (under $20), so I might try another bottle (it is pretty widely available in specialist shops, and I think Terroir also carries it)

Rahsaan: if you are still following this thread. Talked with the guys at Terroir this weekend, and their conclusion is that this might have been a bad bottle. Dagon says there should have been much more berry fruit-it should have been much closer in character to the Counoise bottling I tried last night.

Ah well...it is worth trying again when $ allows.

Sounds likely. I'm not sure I exactly get the descriptor, but 'peanut butter' sure sounds like a wine flaw/bad bottle to me.
