WTN: 2000 Edmunds St. John Syrah (California)

I keep telling myself to wait before opening this wine. I keep not listening.

Deep ruby color (thankfully not purple) is followed by a gorgeous nose of meat, dark cherry, subtle herbs and a touch of flowers. Very rich in flavor on the palate, but in no way a heavy mouthfeel. It's lovely to have something this packed with flavor and not feel like I have to drink it with a fork. Good structure, and enough (more than enough) fruit to age well for several more years, though unfortunately this was my last bottle, and now I am on to the 2001s which will likely meet an unfortunate and untimely end.

Speaking of the 2000 Wylie Fenaughty, I have a bottle that I was going to pair with a 2000 Lagier Meredith Syrah but I didnt think either would be at it's best for a while. Is the 2000 W-F drinking well these days?

David, I'm out of 2000 ESJ syrah as well. Look out '01.

Does a rocking horse have a wooden a-hole? The W-F is drinking just swell - I opened up a bottle two weeks ago and it was singing - in some very nice company, I might add. While it was showing well, it clearly has miles to go before it sleeps. I came across a nice stash of this wine a while back, and will mete the bottles out over the next ten years or so.
It's terrific juice.

Yep. It was the 2000. I bought 3 bottles at retail a while back. All three have been great.

I am also curious at your disbelief. Are you not fond of the 2000?
