I took this photo in the south end of Napa back in July, while the rest of the group was moving on to the next part of the tour. However, there was no way I was moving until I got the shot I wanted.

To me, the uneven ripening adds nice color and give additional complexity to the pic as does the out-of-focus background. Nicely done, Doug.

Definitely for the photo.

Perhaps not for the wine!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I was very happy with this photo as it's what I saw in my mind before I took the shot.

Steve - this was the 26th of July, the grapes were Pinot Noir. I saw clusters like this all over Sonoma too, different varieties.

Well, that's what we were told. This was at Folio - they produce Zin under the Spellbound and Medusa labels but it's all grown elsewhere.

From what I read of the weather and the late spring frost and how it impacted many vineyards this picture makes sense.

Mark, everyone, please note: the picture was taken on the 26th of July. Before veraison was complete. That's the way red grapes look before veraison is complete.

This looks like a bit of "millerandage" which is an uneven fruit set. For a few clusters, in the vineyard, this may be ok due to micro-climates, but if this is seen across the entire vineyard, there's a problem.

John

There was a considerable amount of millerandage last year, all over the state, in many varieties. The weather last year during bloom and set was on the dicey side.
