WTN: 2001 Cap de Faugeres

by David M. Bueker » Sun Jan 04, 2009 7:27 pm

Reports of this wine's demise are untrue.

It's not a heavyweight, but still nicely red-fruited, supple, medium-bodied and all around very pleasant drinking. Don't look for complexity or profundity, but just a good drink.

Bottle variation? The one I opened in May was very dull.

Could be, although I bought my bottle early in '04 (Binnys') and it was well stored since. Unfortuantely I didn't get a chance to try this early, but mine tasted like it was over the hill. A bottle stored in a very cold cellar may show better.

Have you tried the '01 Cambon La Pelouse?

I have not had the Cambon La Pelouse.

I recently discovered that my cellar temp readout has been showing high by about 3 degrees, so my cellar was hovering between 51 and 54 degrees over the course of the year. That might account for the glacial pace of evolution.

Also my bottles never saw a retail shelf.

My bottles of the 2001 Cap de Faugeres and Cambon La Pelouse have always shown decently. Neither is an exciting nor profound wine, but exactly what I would expect, and my cellar is nowhere near as cold as David's. The Cap was bought at Zachy's. I've been drinking them both over last few years, and I have found the Cambon has put on some weight and showed well a few months ago. Remember to keep your expectations reasonable.

Bob and I opened our last 01 CdF just a week ago--it was an excellent bottle and just what you and Diane describe. Not great Bordeaux, but totally satisfying and for the $15 I paid for mine, unbeatable.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

I've drunk all mine, but the '01 was a nice wine (better than the regular Faugeres for my tastes
