WTN: 2005 Finca Sandoval (Manchuela)

by David M. Bueker » Mon Dec 29, 2008 9:41 pm

Maybe I shouldn't be drinking this wine...smells & tastes like the grapes were crushed by an elephant. I have rarely had anything so extracted that didn't come from Napa or Australia. I might pick it blind as Syrah (on second thought, maybe not), but would not have any idea where it came from. Blueberry, tar, iodine flavors & an almost thick mouthfeel.

Yuck.

Good thing Victor doesn't post on WLDG!

Or does he?

The wine was opened by a friend & I really tried to like it, but it doesn't say anything other than POW!! to me.

I retasted on day 2 - no better for me.

It's the third time I have had Finca Sandoval & I honestly cannot endorse the wine, as much as I value Victor's input here and elsewhere.

David, do you think the wine has the stuff to go untouched for 5-6 years and then live the ugly duckling story? I sure hope so since I have a couple from 01-02.

There aren't many Syrahs that I like at vintage plus three. I may be off base, but I have a few of the '04s that I'm going to hold for three or four more years.

Bob,

I have no idea. I just do not like this style of wine, so I do not cellar it.

Dan,

Not quite sure what you are getting at. The wine was certainly not closed. It was big, blocky and unidentifiable.

David, I just prefer giving Syrah (and Shiraz) a few years to settle in. I find most too one-dimensional early in the developmental stages.
