WTN: 1997 Travaglini Gattinara Christmas Eve

by Bob Noland » Wed Dec 24, 2008 9:03 pm

Decanted for an 1 1/2 hours. This wine showed a nose deep and rich right after popping the cork. A nose of forest floor with a tea, black licorice, and bay leaf component complimented by sweet vanilla, strawberry jam, dried prune and fig. On the palate this is well balanced seamless, chewy wine with immediate strawberry jam and a touch of dried cranberry. Overall a very enjoyable food wine with a Christmas Eve dinner of Filet Mignon with devil's steak sauce, broiled fresh asparagus and twice baked potatoes. A cheese course finished the wine and this reviewer... sadly this was my last bottle. Of course tomorrow is another day and I will be ready when the wines get opened for Christmas day :!:
