WTN: Franken Scheu, Rheinhessen Riesling

2007 Juliusspital Würzburger Stein Scheurebe (Franken)
Progress! Not only is this *not* in a Bocksbeutel... but the bottle's under screwcap. :D The aromatics initially are all sage, spices, redcurrants and grapefruit, but on the palate it resembles a NZ Sauvignon Blanc with a light bodied mouthfeel, citrus fruits and grassy herbaceous flavours, lots of acidity and very little sweetness. This changes considerably with time - with almost an hour of air this picks up weight on the palate with green apple, sage and mineral flavours coming out, but the nose takes on a very herbaceous SB-like character with the spicy and redcurrant notes receding and grassy flavours emerging among the sage/grapefruit. Certainly a fun wine to sit down with and not too expensive either.

2007 Wittmann Westhofener Morstein Riesling Spätlese (Rheinhessen)
AP #18. Crammed with peaches, yellow plums, red apple and other sweet orchard fruit flavours from the first sip. With some air a stony mineral character and honeyed notes emerge on the nose and palate. There's tremendous power, richness and concentration here, but all the components are in perfect balance. Great precision and cut with bright acidity underneath all the fruit, and a lovely clean long finish. Very primary now, but really delicious and I could have just kept drinking this through the night (had the bottle not eventually run out).

Sonds very good. Glad to hear about the non-bocksbeutel/screwcap.

Also good to hear about a current Wittmann. I have somewhat lost touch with that winery since they parted company with Terry Theise.
