Do CdRs Shut Down?

by Redwinger » Sun Dec 21, 2008 11:01 am

I confess that I drink most/all my CdRs within a couple of years of purchase, so I can't recall ever having one that I thought was shutdown.

About a year ago, I had a 2005 Dom. La Garrigue, Cuvee Romaine that was stunning/complex. Last evening I opened another bottle, which seemed more restrained and less forward/approachable. Drinkable, but not stunning. Perhaps it is simply bottle variation, but it sure had the hallmarks of a shutdown wine.

Just curious...do CdRs shutdown like CdPs?

I've probably bought/drunk 25 cases of Guigal CdR over the years and about the same amount of other CdRs and I can't remember one that I thought was "shut down". That said, I guess its possible.

I don't think I can recall complaining of a shut-down CdR, but then why wouldn't they shut down? Maybe we have low expectations so a shut-down one is more likely strike us as a run-of-the-mill CdR.

The Domaine La garrigue is not your run of the mill CdR. I am not totally shocked that it has shut down. I always treated it more like a good Gigondas.

i'm guessing a very slight amount of TCA - which diminishes fruit but is not noticable otherwise. its not that CDR can't shut down; but that is more typical of less warm vintages i would think than '05.
