2001 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett (Mosel)
I've been sort of stuck on Selbach lately, though that's really not such a bad thing. Seeking refreshment as well as a good food partner I opened a bottle of this kabinett. I had last tasted it in early 2007 and thought it was drinking well, but not quite where I wanted it to be. 18 months has done magic, making this kabinett a perfect blend of subtle apple skin and peach fruit, smoky brown spice & pure mineral water. The balance is perfect, with the brighter-than-recent-vintages acidity giving the wine a finishing kick I haven't run across much in the last few years.

Smelling and tasting this wine I am reminded of a day at Selbach-Oster in 2003 when Hans Selbach opened wines for us & spent some of his precious time talking with two people who were coming to the Mosel for the first time. It's been a few years, but we still miss you Hans.
