Nederburg Shiraz Winemaster's Reserve 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Dec 16, 2008 7:57 pm

Western Cape

Dark red in the glass.

Bacon fat, charred, smoky and brettanomyces on the nose.

Medium weight, very tangy, cherry, raspberry, leather, smoked meat, spicy, smoky, heavily charred, with that bandaid-barnyard-antiseptic brett profile that I often find in South African wines.

A tangy finish, smoky, with strong brett.

A rather extreme wine, one that people will either love or hate. Personally, I usually enjoy wine with some brett, but I found this to be really over the top and a glass or two was more than enough.

Purchased at $10.95 (Canadian).

Bruce,

This wine sounds awesome. Please tell me it's currently available at the LCBO? or at Vintages?

Very detailed notes Bruce!

I've had several bottles of this wine recently and found it to be an amazing value as well. Available on the LCBO General List at 10.95.

I don't however find the Brett that you noted. I do find it to be very smoky and agree that it has a really interesting smoked meat character in addition to the dark fruit but no Brett. I liked it for the Rhone feel vs Aussie style that domiantes so many Syrah's at this price point.

Well worth a try in my opinon as well.

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks for the input Steve. I was wondering, as I was drinking it, if I had a slightly off bottle, as it didn't correspond to the review I read which prompted me to buy it.

That's it - I've got to get some!!!

Sounds like my beloved Pinotages of the mid-1990s...
