WTN: Fine Rosso Abazia, good Givry, Morgon & GV

Kremser Schmidt Grüner Veltliner Trocken Kremstal Qualitätswein 2007 – Winzer Krems Sangrube 13 – Alc. 12% - was a gift from Austrian friends. It was bursting with primary grapey fruit and was deliciously quaffable but much less serious and subtle which those which I recently tasted from Nigl; 15/20.

Morgon Terres Dorées 2007 Jean-Paul Brun – Alc. 12% - was more than just deliciously quaffable with quite lean linear body, bright moreish acidity, minerals and deliciously fresh fruit. I don’t think that this is a Morgon for the long haul but, no problem, because it is drinking so well now; 16/20.

“Il Rosso del Abazia” Vino del tavola del Veneto 1997 – Serafini & Vidotto, Nervesa della Battaglia (TV) – Alc 12.5% - is a Bordeaux blend, Cabernet dominated, I think; it has been a regular winner of Gambero Rosso’s 3 bicchieri award. Its aromas were a discreetly delicious complex of red and dark fruit, black currant, blackberry, a touch of cherry and liqueur, with tobacco and cedar and its palate was medium/full bodied, silky and ingratiatingly moreish with a classical shape, good length and an elegant and light sweetness of touch. We felt that we could easily despatch another bottle and, if there is a criticism, it is that the wine is a tad too easy and insufficiently challenging; delicious, though; 17/20.

Givry 1er cru “Petit Marole” 1999 – Domaine François Lumpp – (red)- Alc.13% - (€22 for 2006) represents excellent QPR with its elegant aromas of cherry, minerals and a touch of liqueur and its silky medium weight body, smooth acidity, resolving structure and good length; 16/20+++.

Thanks for that excellent link, Bob.

This is a seriously good wine. I was steered it its direction at a tasting a few years ago by an excellent Belgian wine merchant who has since left the profession to become a tea merchant; for health reasons apparently.

Tim -

this is the first time I've heard of the Serafini also, sounds like something I would enjoy. Do you happen to know if this is an estate wine, or does it have some connection with Abbazia di Novacella?

Yes, the Rosso Abazia is an estate wine. It has no connection with Abbazia di Novacella, a new one for me, which comes from Alto Adige and is spelled differently. It is well worth seeking out.

Well for starters, it's Jean-Paul Brun, so he would probably prefer to be called a vigneron.

His wines are pure Beaujolais, nothing heavy or overdone. Are they not available in Canada?
