WTN: Estampa Gold 2004 (A Tale of Two Bottles)

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Dec 09, 2008 7:15 pm

Bodega Estampa
Colchagua Valley

A blend of Carménere (53 per cent), Cabernet Sauvignon (30), Cabernet Franc (14) and Petit Verdot (3).

Very dark purple, almost black, in the glass.

A huge nose: chocolate, leather, earth, spice, shoe polish.

Huge in the mouth, smoky, roasted, black cherry, tangy acidity, peppery, some heat toward the end. What's this??!! Darn, it's corked, although it didn't reveal iteself until the end of the first glass, but it's there: both on the nose and in the mouth.

Second bottle.

Very dark purple, almost black, in the glass.

Not much on the nose, green and woody.

Medium weight, drying, green, not very nice. With time, the wine gained a bit of body and picked up some chocolate, but it still had that young sapling thing going on.

Very disappointing. Even with the corkiness, I still preferred the first bottle.

Purchased at $17.95 (Canadian).
