Peller Estates' Baco has long been a favourite of mine. It's a wine that can be easily picked up at the LCBO on general list for just under $10. Humbly priced, and bearing a very decent though unfashionable 12% alc./vol., it is also one of the more balanced wines out there in this age where numbers like 14.5% have become ever more common.
$9.95 on general list at the LCBO. Closed with a composite natural cork.
Intense, black/cherry-red hue, though deep magenta at the rim; a very brooding, beautiful colour. A bit disjointed immediately upon opening; already, though, aromas of riparia and vanillin poke their way out of the brooding wild darkness. Sweet oak spice atop primary Baco aromatics. Tart and brisk acidity on the entry, with a palate-waking, fresh texture; light bodied yet perfectly balanced; diminutive tannins come in towards the finish. Very much a wine that cleans the palate and invigorates the tastebuds. Lots of riparia character shining through in this one; not much overt fruit - though this could change by tomorrow.
Overall, it reminds me quite a bit of Harbour Estates' '06 Baco, both in colour and aromatics.
