WTN: 2006 Pascal Granger Beaujolais Villages

by David M. Bueker » Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:25 pm

Another item from the "Red Wines for Turkey" tasting at Table & Vine:

One whiff & this is clearly Beaujolais, but in a more classic (read: not 2003 or 2005) manner. It's all strawberries & cranberries on the nose. It's more towards the cherry spectrum on the palate though (to quote Michael Quinlan, Table & Vine's Wine Buyer & my enabler: "It's darker than it smells.") with a chalky acidity that is a little drying, but overall very refreshing. Fun, grower-made stuff, though the fx that this was purchased at puts the price at $14.99. Very enjoyable wine though.

Was 2006 in general a more classic vintage for Beaujolais? Any other recent vintages you'd rate as generally classic in style?

I am no Beaujolais expert, but 2006 and 2004 are more classical in style to my palate.

I love 2005 by the way, it's just bigger, richer and more ageworthy, but in no way goopy or anything like that.
