WTN: Montgras Cabernet Sauvignon Reserva 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Sun Nov 16, 2008 8:10 pm

Colchagua Valley.

Dark purple in the glass.

Floral, spicy, cherry and a little green on the nose.

Medium weight, rather stewed black cherry, raspberry, strawberry, quite tangy with a hint of cranberry, cocoa, lots of spice, tobacco, cedar.

Stewed/candied fruit on the tangy finish.

I checked back through my notes and the last time I had this wine (the 2004 vintage) it was much better than this effort, mainly because of the stewed/cooked fruit. A disappointment to be sure.

Purtchased at $10.85 (Canadian).

Bruce,

Thanks again for the great notes - they are always useful to me.

You know, I am always a bit suspicious when it comes to these types of reds; when I hear "tangy" and "Cab Sauvignon" together, for example, it makes me think of a wine that's been acidified because shortcuts have been practiced in the vineyard. There's a balanced acidity in good ripe Cab that isn't particularly tangy - and certainly not if it resembles anything like Kool-Aid/powdered-ice-tea/acid-crystal tanginess.

Have you tried Santa Rita Reserva Cab Sauvignon? It's widely available on general list and was always pretty decent.
