1998 Penny's Hill Shiraz (Red Dot), McClaren Vale

One of the last cellar remnants of my Shiraz flirtation of 8 or 9 years ago. Decanted about 45 minutes. The color looks good and some bacony elements waft from the decanter. On the palate it is medium bodied with someteensy bit of black fruit. That is it. Short clipped finish. The entire package is overwhelmed by the oak...kudos to the cooper. Barely suffices as an alcohol delivery device. Train wreck in a bottle.

Personally, I'm a Benny Hill fan. (couldn't resist)
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Howie-

Good one! Sometimes resistance is futile. That said, you might want to consider bringing your talent over to the Word Association Thread on F&F...they need all the help they can get.

Actually, this wine and Benny Hill do have a lot in common. They're both DEAD!

Cheers,

Bill

Yikes. That note reminds me a lot of that 97 Glaetzer Shiraz I opened - except I think mine may have been more undrinkable.

I've tasted another vintage of Red Dot on release (think it was the 05?) and wasn't impressed at all. Found it candied, over the top, simple and lacking in structure. No surprise to see the wines aging this way.

I've liked Penny Hill Chardonnay in the past. It was not unoaked but seemed to be subtle on the oak.

Ah, Glaetzer Shiraz. A few years ago I opened a 1996 Glaetzeer Shiraz from a magnum. Drinkable, but certainly unremarkable/disappointing at best. Sometimes, these flirtations just don't work out.
