Wine shops in Dover DE?

by Doug Surplus » Sat Nov 08, 2008 9:40 pm

I'm spending Thanksgiving week in Dover with my high school buddy and his family, prior to our attending our XXth class reunion in Baltimore.

I want to be able to buy some good wine for Turkey Day and other dinners while I'm there. Anyone know of some good shops? I'll be looking for WA Pinot Noir, German Riesling and Alsatian Gewurztramminer. Maybe a decent Bordeaux/Meritage.

Reccos?

There is a nice shop in Elkton, MD called State Line Liquors. It may be a little out of the way, but they have a nice selection of Rhone wines. It's probably 45 minutes.

That was an extremely popular place when I was attending the University of Delaware at Newark. It's about a 5 minute drive from campus... where the drinking age was much higher at the time. :D

I don't know what kind of place it was when you were in school (I will avoid the cracks about parchment.), but it is a very good wine store now.

Good thing, too, James, since you are older than I am.

Doug, what airport are you flying into?

I'm flying into Philly - it was significantly cheaper than BWI. Then down to Dover for most of the week.

Probably won' t pass Elkton until Sunday/Monday on my way back to Philly from Baltimore.

Just off I-95 is Kreston Liquors, Market Street, Wilmington. On your way and a decent selection. See their web site for directions.

If you get down to Rehoboth Beach (37 miles) there are two great wine shops. Atlantic Wine & Liquors at 4471 Highway 1 in Rehoboth; and Coastal Wine & Spirits about five miles north of town.

Cheers, Carl

Great suggestion, Carl. I haven't been to Rehobeth Beach in a very long time. We used to make it there, Ocean City MD and/or Cape May NJ a couple times each summer. Of course, teh swimming isn't going to be very good this time of year and the boardwalk will be closed up. Oh well.

If you are coming down I-95 from Philly try here. The link for State Line Liquors is right here too.

Doug--

If you're interested in an excursion down the coast, there's also Teller Wines in Lewes, Del. (http://www.tellerwines.com), Liquid Assets in Ocean City (Coastal Hwy & 94th), Late Nite Liquors in Ocean City (Coastal Hwy & 66th or so), and the Green Room in West O.C. (Rt. 50 west, near Race Track Rd). Despite the name, Late Nite Liquors has probably the best selection in Delmarva. (Would you believe all five First Growths, some from the 80s? Multiple vintages of Baumard Quarts du Charmes? They're selling a ton of Miller Lite, for sure, but I still can't figure how they pull it off. No affiliation, BTW, other than the fact I'm a frequent customer.)

Have a great reunion. What school?

Thanks for all the reccos!

Clinton, sounds like a trip down the cost to Late Nite might be worth the time.

The school is Parkville Senior High, on Putty Hill Ave just north of Harford Rd.

Clinton, do you happen to know if the School for the Blind still has their peach and apple orchards? Their website makes no mention of them at all. I have great memories of munching on Black Twigs from the bag we kept in our garage all winter.

Sorry, Doug, no idea about the orchards. Here's a web address for Late Nite, BTW: http://www.lateniteliquors.com. They often offer some pretty wonderful mark-downs this time of year to reduce inventory for the off-season. "Guy" is the very knowledgeable owner, and he loves talking wine.
