WTN: Coyote's Run Unoaked Chardonnay 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Nov 08, 2008 9:29 pm

Four Mile Creek VQA

Moderate dark yellow in the glass.

Nothing on the nose.

Peppery, mouthwatering tanginess, green apple, pear, lime, a little spritzy on the tongue, lightly creamy.

After a couple of glasses the wine seemed to shut down, losing all fruit and turning quite peppery and tart-tangy.

A mouthwatering finish with lime.

The first glass or two was pretty good, but then the wine went south. Not sure if this was a flawed bottle or what.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $14.95 (Canadian).

Strange! The fact that there's no nose would tempt me to suspect a flawed bottle. A young chard should smell of something!

Yeah, nothing on the nose is usually one of my first clues that something is wrong.

Weel, this also could have been a real quick fermentation of green grapes from young vines too, then no tank time (and thus no marriage, and no yeast autolysis allowed).

That would account for (what I perceived as) no fruit, high acid, primary/simplistic flavors, no compleixities and apparently no secondary development, thin texture, and its quick fade.

There's 'unoaked chardonnay' and then there's "tank to the bank" 'Chardonnay'.
