2006 Neil Ellis Sauvignon Blanc South Africa
Pretty awful, smelling of armpits and gooseberry. Yuck.
2006 Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Regional Collection 12.5%
Simple passion fruit and grapefruit aromas, decent acidity but linear and dull.
1998 Ceretto Barolo Bricco Rocche 14.5%
Finally something to smile about. The third of six bottles bought a few years ago in a fit of self-love. Very pale red, with considerable bricking around the edges (would have guessed, from looks alone, that this was 20+ years old, not 10). Lovely leather and dark berry aromas. Perfect acid/fruit balance, ravishingly elegant and classy flavors, still quite tannic, but this last aspect not offputting in the slightest because of the tremendous equipoise of every element. Alcohol completely integrated. A wine to savor, slowly.
2005 Kracher Cuvée Beerenauslese 12.5%
A lower end bottling from Kracher made from Chardonnay (80%) and Welschriesling (20%). Pleasant apricot and botrytis aromas and flavors with a touch of banana at the edges. Good and fresh dessert quaffer, but nothing to write home about.
