WTN: 2003 Lupine Hill Cabernet Sauvignon

by RichardAtkinson » Thu Nov 06, 2008 6:23 pm

Nice cab from Tucolay area of Napa (Coombsville?). One of Frazier Vineyards wines. Not the Reserve Cab. A little tight aroma –wise when first opened. But in about 20 minutes the nose really opened up. If I had been tasting it blind, I would probably have guessed it was a Super Tuscan of some sort. The nose of black cherries and leather is somewhat reminiscent of a hot year chianti. Fairly fruit forward, nice acidity and good tannic structure. Blended with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and a touch of Petit Verdot. Nice finish. Also, like most of the Frazier wines I’ve tried. There is a light touch on th use of oak.

About $30.00. A good buy for non-typical Napa Cab.

Richard, with that name I opened this note thinking I was going to read about a Texas wine. Good note, sounds like a wine many of us on this board would like. Thanks!

Well Jenise,

I've yet to find a Texas Cab worth a positive WTN. But I keep looking :D

What about Llano Estacado out of, I think, Lubbock? Years ago I thought it surprisingly good...but that was very early in our marriage and likely pre-enlightenment.

Jenise

Most Texas Cab, in my experience, tends a bit towards the over-oaked side of the spectrum. At least of the last few years. But I suppose the market supports that style.
