Wines while watching the election returns?

by Howie Hart » Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:42 am

I think I'll be sipping a home made native American hybid - Steuben Rosé. 8)
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

We'll very likely be out at victory parties where it'll be mass-market wine or beer, but hey. :D

Why not take a good bottle with you and spread the wealth?

Unfortunately I decided to pass on the Election Night offline because of more pointy-headed plans. But my contribution to the theme was going to be something sweet for the victors (Coteaux du Layon) and something bitter for the losers (Muscadet).

At some point the losers can switch to this - should go well with what they'll be eating....

I'll be finishing a bottle of Austrian Riesling that I opened this weekend. Will post in Wine Focus later this week. If Obama wins Virginia I should be celebrating with a Virginian wine.

Bottle of Ogier (La Rosine) for the "O." Followed by bubbly if things turn out as predicted.

Either the '98 or the 2000. (Have one bottle left of each.) Actually, now that I think about it, it should be the 2000 to make up for what happened that year.

Aha, good point!

I have bottles of the 99, 03, and 06 and was just wondering how they were drinking as I was thinking of opening them soon.

Good idea! I have a couple bottles of the 2001 left. I will pull out one of those, with a little tape and a marker it can be an Obama La Rosine! Or maybe a Donnhoff Obama L. Kabinett, or an Andrea Obama Barolo. Thanks for idea.

Trying not to think too far ahead, but also carrying a Champagne. I wish I had a Gruet Blanc de Noirs.

As posted elsewhere, I realized this morning (belatedly) that one can't buy wine in my benighted state on election day, so no bubbly for us unless one of our guests brings it. In the interest of renewing our International relations, I've got a Movia Ribolla, a vin de Savoie and an '02 Bordeaux queued up.

Mark is licking his lips........>I've got a Movia Ribolla,

I purchased 2 bottles earlier this year, both corked so alert time Mark. The corks were terrible, very poor quality.

Tonite, after the brief Riesling session and a visit to FarmFare (rodeo in town) a bottle of `04 Scurati, Nero d`Avola.

No help here. I've gone through three bottles each of the 1998 and 2000 and think they're drinking well now, but I haven't yet tried my '99s and don't own the others.

Too bad they don't make Kenyan, Hawaiian, Indonesian or Chicago wine -- at least as far as I know. Might try to find a bottle of Tusker somewhere, though.

Gruet's a great idea since New Mexico could be the state to put him over the top. But all I've got is a Pinon -- not that I'm complaining!

They do! I saw it on the Travel Channel - Hawaiian Wine.

I'm optimistic and have a bottle of Champagne chilling.
But I got my passport out too just in case the polls are wrong.

Not even on release? Wow, you're really giving these the full-on cellar treatment.

Mark-
You can buy in Indiana after the polls close at 6PM.
Try to explain/find the logic of why we can't buy booze while the polls are open today, but it was OK to sell alcohol while early voting was going on during the last few weeks?? Logic in legislation...what a concept. :?:

Don't the shops open the minute the polls close, Mark? That's the way it works here and in many states (it's not just flyover country) where liquor stores close during the polls.

McCain fans could go for a Cain Five.

Maybe I'll also open a Georges Duboeuf to say bye-bye George Bush. (I have a Morgon Descombes that just arrived by UPS but may be experiencing travel shock. Heck the candidates will probably be experiencing NON-travel shock the rest of the week. No need to fly to four states a day and hold rallies at midnight!) Frankly, I don't know how they did it for all these months!
