At least this one is.

I've admitted I like trying new wines, especially those reccomended by other people.

Follow where the shepherds direct, I suppose.

Been a term of contempt on wine boards for so long as I've participated on them.

Always thought following the shepherds would keep me safe.

But ... that can get you in trouble too, as this tale will tell.

I shopped at the Market Basket for some lovely tuna, delicious blueberries, fresh peas -- all recommended by my doctor (and Janet).

I went next door to the Endless Vine.

Bought a 2005 Dr. L as suggested by Robin for Wine of the month on WLDG Light.

Bought a 2004 Condrieu by Guigal as suggested by Jenise for Wine Focus on WLDG Heavy.

Loaded my cart and remembered one of the finest tasting notes I've ever read [by Jim Cowan]:

"NV Toffoli Prosecco ($10-12). I had just finished shopping at Trader Joe's for my weekly pantry maintenance, when I saw a fifty-ish man in a floral print shirt, Dockers and old loafers hop up on the back of his cart. He proceeded to ride along the gentle slope right to his car. Following his example (and much to three year old Michael's delight) I did the same. Just that bit of breeze and fun on a hot, muggy day made me feel refreshed. The fellow shot me a knowing smile and drove off. It was a brief encounter, but it still makes me happy. I should do that more often. Happy summer, friends. LM.

I do not expect you to understand this note but, is it possible to feel it? Best, Jim."

The note was no sooner rembered, but Jim's good advice was put into action.

The cart clattered with a charming uproar.

We swooped down the gentle slope in full control.

We stopped with a flourish at our red pickup -- much to Clive's delight at seeing me back. [Clive is two and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.]

Every positive happy result -- just as Jim experienced.

But ...

Ted, one of my advisers in the produce department at the Market Basket, was gathering carts.

He frowned.

He shook his finger.

"Muy peligroso, Señor. Muy peligroso."

I was crestfallen.

I threw the wine and groceries in the truck body, pushed the cart over to Ted, and slunk away.

At least Clive was happy with me.

It may not be as bad as I fear.

I think Ted was smiling at me as Clive and I drove away.

Or was that a smirk?

Just so you know, that note was written (and experienced) by Larry Meehan; I cited it to someone as the kind of tasting note that I aspire to. Were that I had been there that day - and come to think of it, I have been there - just not that day.

Did you leave your dog in the car while you were shopping? This is a big no, no from what I understand. Our Labador would be persona non grata on any shopping trip any ways. Enjoy your food and wine, but leave the dog at home. Unless of course I am completely missing something here, which is highly likely.

Oh, I wondered what that "LM" meant, Jim. I deleted it, but I'll edit it back in.

Great tasting note -- and I enjoyed follwoing the suggestion and my comeuppance.

Ted will give it to me next time I start griping about why they don't have decent sweet corn. :-)

That will add to the fun.

No, I take Clive everywhere. The Market Basket has a little cage for their garbage containers under some shady trees along a stream. Clive waits near the cage in the grass and the shade -- same temp as he would be in at home.

Barks his brains out usually -- and wonderfully joyous when I return.

We do the same thing when we walk to the Market Basket -- three miles -- usually every day. Clive handles the walk better than I do.

Just as long as he isn't in the car. Our Labrador would love the walk to the market, but there would be no place to tie her up and all her friendly barking would be misinterpreted. Of course all she wants is for someone to play ball or frisbee. She'd lick any burglar to death. It sounds like you have a great neighborhood though.

I'm not so sure how friendly it is, James -- it's certainly a pain in the ass walking in a town with very few sidewalks. Clive and I go to considerable effort to find safe passage on two of the three miles on our trek.

The beauty of Clive's parking place is created by the garbage containers. The cage is located about a hundred feet from any parking and 300 feet from the nearest store. Clive seems to enjoy the aromas, barks his head off, and nobody comes close to him except me.

I agree completely with your admonition about keeping dogs in cars when you aren't present to be sure they are safe.
