WTN: 2002 Comtes Lafon Meursault Goutte d'Or

by Jacques Levy » Mon Oct 20, 2008 9:58 pm

A friend of mine gave me this bottle three years ago and we drank it with some pasta with crabmeat in a sherry cream sauce, baked cod and sauteed vegetables. We needed something special to reassure us that the world is not falling apart, that there is still value in the world's capital markets, and that the Knicks may actually field a competitive team this season (ok, I'm just hallucinating on this last point).

The wine is good, I know it's supposed to be special, it had a nice nose of minerals, a refined texture almost like a Chevalier, but on the palate it is a bit lean, like I said before just good not great.

The more we drank the more we felt that something is out of balance. It is obviously not oxidized but the fruit is weak and not getting better. There is a slightly unpleasant bitterness that clashes with rather than enhances the food. I am left thinking that I would have been better with something a bit fatter. A "bleh" experience. Maybe the worse in the markets is not over just yet.

Sorry it didn't show better. Isn't this a wine we had a John G's one night?
Hope wine (and market) get better.

Dale, yes, we had this at John's one night paired with a Coche if I remember right. I'm sticking with Puligny and Chassagne from now on.

Yeah, but she also said:
Oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends,
Worked hard all my lifetime, no help from my friends,
So oh Lord, won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?

:D

You should both move down to Brazil, where interest rates are so high that there are no credit problems because nobody leverages or borrows! You can listen to Janis on the beach for the rest of your lives clipping coupons and living off the lean of the land...

As long as we can come over to your place for a bottle of vino now and then...
