WTN: Bründlmayer again :)

by Saina » Sun Oct 19, 2008 2:24 pm

I love it when this happens: I find a "sold out" vintage at the back of the shelf of a wine I really enjoyed when it was officially available - especially because it is cheap for what it delivers. There must be a million old notes of mine on this wine floating about in the bitty ether, but I think we can fit one more:

  • 2004 Weingut Willi Bründlmayer Zweigelt - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal, Langenlois (10/19/2008)
12,21€; 12% abv. Red berried fruit, earthy and slightly herbaceous; sweet/ripe fruit, but light on its feet, juicy and refreshingly acidic, still has nice tannins. Very moreish and quite long. Drink now and keep. Always a charming cheap wine.

The 2005 of this, which is now available, is also very nice, but it does seem more sugary than this one. Since I preferred the brightness of the '04 I'm happy to have found a couple more. :)

I have a hard time believing anything costs 12 Euros in your area!

Me too. But there are actually three wines that I truly enjoy at this minimal price level here: a pink Cab Franc bubbly from the Loire (I can't remember which), Barbaglio (an almost Musar-like red from Salento) and this lovely Zweigelt. I just wish we had more affordable, but honestly lovely wines.
