WTN: 90 Meyney w/Bryan's Fine Foods Porterhouse

by Dale Williams » Sat Oct 18, 2008 2:12 pm

One of my birthday presents from Betsy was a big porterhouse from Bryan Flannery. Just killer meat! Served with sweet potato, green beans, and salad. Betsy just took a 4 oz portion (Sonoma diet), I had plenty. Wine was the 1990 Ch. Meyney (St. Estephe). Meyney and Gloria were my standbys when I got into Bordeaux, and I've drunk quite a few of these. This has solid cassis fruit, a bit of leather and cigarbox, mostly resolved tannins. All well and good, but there has always been just a touch of a roasted note to this, and age has made it more pronounced. This is a good wine, but probably near end of its plateau, and doesn't have the balance or verve of the '86 or '89 Meyneys (classic overachievers). The low acid character of the vintage shows through. Good though! B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

We like to share porterhouses the same way. And with a good Bordeaux too!

What's the Sonoma Diet? Small amounts of food accompanied by large amounts of wine?

Well, as diets go not most restrictive. Tries to reduce simple starches (use whole grains), meat/fish with almost every meal, (but careful portion control),etc. Wine is part of diet (although if you are doing "wave 1", I think no wine for 10 day induction period). Betsy periodically goes on it to lose 5 lbs (and I don't , though I could lose FAR more than she). But I never fill deprived when she is cooking based on it. There are a couple cookbooks, just means we eat more peppers. quinoa, barley, broccoli, spinach, etc. Chicken breasts rather than thighs, flank steak more than ribeyes.
